Yucca schidigera is a plant that grows mainly in the region of Baja California in Mexico. It is mainly its steroidal saponin content that is sought after by nutritionists. Saponins have multiple properties: they reduce nitrogen emissions in livestock while improving animal digestion. They are widely used in pet food to reduce the smell of faeces in particular. They also have an effect on certain protozoan organisms, in particular coccidia. Their ability to bind nitrogen is also used in other fields such as horticulture and market gardening.
